DIY- Moon dreamcatcher

In the land of dreams, everything becomes possible... especially with a DIY dreamcatcher in the shape of a moon hanging above your child's bed! In this new DIY, we suggest you make a pretty moon dreamcatcher to accompany your child on their most beautiful adventures at nightfall.

What could be more poetic than a moon to catch dreams? Made of macramé, the Pierrot Gourmand DIY dreamcatcher hangs like a garland in your child's room, and becomes a night light at bedtime. A reassuring nocturnal presence and a touch of magic, which will accompany him when he dives into wonderland. Discover now the steps to make your DIY dreamcatcher!

The list of equipment:

  • A metal hanger (already closed and welded available in supermarkets)

  • 5mm macrame rope

  • Golden string

  • A pair of scissors

  • A pair of pliers for cutting the hanger

  • A glue gun

  • A string of lights

The stages of implementation:

Step 1: The shape of the Moon

Form a moon about 25 cm high using a metal coat hanger to form the base of your dream catcher and wrap the macramé cord all around the moon. Add a few dots of hot glue in certain areas so that the cord does not move.

Start and end the tour on one of the points of the moon.

Step 2: Preparing the macrame

Prepare and cut the macramé threads: 13 threads of 1.70 m + 2 threads of 2.50 m. Hang the threads one by one on the bottom of the moon, forming a lark knot as shown in the picture. Tie the 2.50 m long threads at locations 7 and 9.

Then make a few passes with gold thread on the edges of the moon like a spider web. Block the gold thread by making a small knot.

Step 3: Weaving the macrame

Now weave the macramé by working on the 3 double threads in the middle (6 strands in total), we will call them ABCDEF. You can also annotate them at the ends with masking tape to help you find your way.

Step 4: Diagonal to the left

a) Make a first simple knot between C and D (the 2 middle threads), then make a diagonal half-hitch knot from right to left using D as the supporting thread.

Wrap B around D, passing it underneath, then over, and under again to form a first half-hitch knot.

b) Make a second knot with the same threads (B wrapped over D) always starting thread D diagonally towards the left.

c) Now make a half hitch knot with thread A wrapped around D (under/over/under).

d) Then a second half-hitch knot A wrapped around D. The first diagonal to the left is done!

Step 5: Diagonal to the right

e) Proceed in the same way to make a diagonal to the right. This time use wire C as the supporting wire: E wrapped around C (under/over/under)

f) Make a second knot with the same threads (E wrapped around C); Then make a half-hitch knot with thread F wrapped around C (under/over/under)

g) Then a second half-hitch knot F wrapped around C.

h) You get the second diagonal this time to the right.

Step 6 : Center Knots

Make a square knot in the center with the ABEF threads.

i) Bring yarn A under the 2 carrier yarns (B and E) and pass over F; Then pass F over the carrier yarns and into the left loop under yarn A.

j) Gently pull threads F and A to tighten the first knot.

k) Bring yarn F over the 2 carrier yarns (B and E) and pass under A; Then pass A under the carrier yarns and into the left loop under yarn F.

l) Tighten the knot by pulling the threads while keeping the supporting threads B and E straight.

Step 7 : Diagonal weaving m/n/o

Weave diagonally again in half-hitch knots in the same way as before, starting from left to right and then from right to left.p) Finish with a simple knot with the 2 middle strands.

Step 8: Weaving and more weaving !

Repeat this pattern 3 times (steps 4 to 7) and finish with a simple knot between the 2 middle strands.

Step 9 : Making the pompoms

Make 9 macramé yarn pom poms which you will then hang on the dream catcherCut 3 strands of macramé thread 28cm long and fold them in half on a pencil. Wrap gold thread to hold the 3 threads together and make a double knot to secure the pompom. Do not cut the excess thread which will then be used as a fastener on the dreamcatcher.

Step 10: Hang the pom poms

Hang the pompoms on the macramé using the gold thread. Arrange them diagonally so that they form a point downwards and cut the bottom of the threads of your macramé following the same shape.

Hang a string of lights for even more magic ✨.

A superb dream catcher to decorate your room or those of your children!

And there you have it, your DIY moon-shaped dreamcatcher is now complete!

Create a DIY dreamcatcher, a magical activity for dreamy nights

A wonderful Native American talisman, traditionally made from feathers, beads and woven string, the dreamcatcher is a symbol of protection, created to ward off bad dreams. Having become a decorative object, children like to imagine that it really has this extraordinary power: that of preserving their sleep.

How about hanging his dream catcher moon above your child's bed, or hanging it on an adjacent wall so that it is always visible at bedtime?

When he wakes up, you could then exercise his memory by asking him a few questions about his dreams from the previous night? A very gentle way to defuse nightmares and keep the pretty dreams alive in his memory.
